Overview Energy and Meta have forged a first-of-its-kind agreement to integrate space solar energy into Meta's data center operations across the United States. Announced from Ashburn, Virginia, this partnership aims to advance American-built space solar energy technology, with an orbital demonstration planned for 2028 and commercial power delivery slated for 2030.
Under the agreement, Meta will gain early access to up to 1GW of capacity from Overview's space solar energy system. This innovative system collects continuous solar energy in geosynchronous orbit and beams it as low-intensity, near-infrared light to existing terrestrial solar facilities. This process allows ground assets to operate around-the-clock, significantly increasing their output without requiring new land or extensive grid interconnection processes.
Nat Sahlstrom, VP of Energy and Sustainability at Meta, highlighted the collaboration as a "transformative step forward" and a commitment to pioneering innovative energy solutions for Meta's AI ambitions. Marc Berte, CEO of Overview Energy, emphasized that this approach enables hyperscalers like Meta to secure clean, reliable power and accelerate deployment.
Overview's technology is engineered to meet U.S. regulatory, grid integration, and safety standards, with an advisory board that includes former NASA Administrators Jim Bridenstine and Mike Griffin, and former FERC Chairman Joseph Kelliher. The agreement positions Meta as a frontrunner in securing future space solar energy capacity, marking a significant step toward incorporating space solar energy into America's diverse energy infrastructure.
