The Oakland City Council unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium on new data center approvals. The temporary ban allows the city to study potential impacts involving electricity demand, water use, air quality, noise, backup generators and infrastructure before developing permanent regulations.

The Oakland City Council voted 7-0 to approve a 45-day moratorium on new data center land-use approvals after several hours of public testimony opposing the facilities and their potential environmental and infrastructure impacts. Councilmember Carroll Fife sponsored the urgency ordinance.

The pause gives Oakland staff time to study data centers’ expected effects on electricity demand, water consumption, air quality, noise, backup generators and other infrastructure. The city has received inquiries and preliminary proposals for data centers but does not yet have regulations specifically governing them, and the council may extend the moratorium while permanent rules are developed.
