Environmental and community groups, including Food and Water Watch and NYRenews, are advocating for a three-year moratorium on new hyperscale data center construction in New York State. The initiative, backed by a bill (S.9144/A.10141) in the New York State legislature, aims to address concerns about energy consumption, environmental impact, and rising utility bills. A rally was held in Albany to press for the legislation.
According to Eric Weltman, Senior Organizer for Food and Water Watch, the rapid expansion of data centers is increasing energy demand, driving fossil fuel pollution, straining water resources, devouring land, and increasing utility bills. Ryan Madden of New York Renews highlighted the strain on the energy grid and higher energy costs for consumers due to the power needs of data centers, particularly for AI and cryptocurrency operations.
The proposed moratorium would provide the state, specifically the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Public Service Commission, time to thoroughly examine these impacts and develop regulatory policies. Advocates are intensifying their efforts given the shortened legislative session due to an ongoing state budget impasse.
