The Joplin Sustainable Technology Alliance (JSTA) is seeking public input to develop a Community Benefit Agreement to protect residents from the environmental and resource impacts of a proposed data center in Joplin, Missouri. This comes after the Joplin City Council moved forward with the annexation and rezoning of 600 acres for the large-scale project despite public opposition. JSTA hopes this agreement will provide safeguards for the community.

A local environmental group, the Joplin Sustainable Technology Alliance (JSTA), is now focused on creating a Community Benefit Agreement (CBA) to protect Joplin residents from the potential environmental and resource impacts of a proposed data center. This initiative follows the Joplin City Council's decision earlier this year to annex and rezone 600 acres in the Wildwood Ranch area for the development of a large-scale data center, despite significant public testimony against the project.
JSTA is currently in the drafting phase of this agreement and is seeking public input before presenting it to the Joplin City Council or the developer, Geronimo Power. Kathy Christie with the Missouri Coalition for the Environment spoke to residents about the importance of such an agreement, which aims to mitigate concerns regarding air quality, water contamination, and noise levels. Organizers expressed that citizens feel compelled to take these protective measures themselves, believing that the City Council is not adequately addressing their concerns.
