Lambda announces $33.1 billion AI data center in Lowndes County, largest economic development project in county history
Lambda announced plans to build the $33.1 billion Red Clay Technology Center data center campus in Lowndes County, Alabama. The project is expected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs, generate billions in tax revenue and support local schools, but residents have raised concerns about its environmental and community impacts.
Lambda plans to develop the Red Clay Technology Center Campus near U.S. Highway 80 and Alabama Highway 21 in Lowndes County, with construction expected to begin in early 2027 and continue for up to five years. The $33.1 billion project is projected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs and more than 225 permanent positions, while generating an estimated $3.4 billion in combined state and local tax revenue through 2049.
The campus is expected to use closed-loop cooling and water-conservation measures developed with N-Drip, while Alabama Power would provide electricity pending regulatory approval. Lambda and Cloverleaf Infrastructure are also funding a $10 million community benefits agreement. Local officials and school leaders welcomed the projected revenue, but residents have questioned the project's effects on regional resources, infrastructure and community character and are seeking more information about its environmental and financial impacts.
