The Weld County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a special use permit for Global AI to construct what is anticipated to be the largest data center in Colorado. The decision, made after an eight-hour meeting with approximately 40 public comments, faced significant community opposition.
Residents raised concerns primarily about water usage, power consumption, and noise. Chairman Scott James addressed these, stating that Poudre Valley, the power supplier, confirmed capacity, and Global AI would implement a closed-loop system for water. The facility is planned for the former Kodak site, situated between Greeley and Windsor, and is expected to operate in phases, employing 80 to 200 people. The county has pledged to monitor the data center, particularly regarding noise compliance.
Global AI aims for the data center to be operational by the end of the year, with building permits to be applied for following this initial approval.
