Protesters opposing data center developments in Jackson, Mississippi, converged on a planning board meeting, leading to heightened tensions and allegations of threats against elected officials.

The meeting, held inside the Hood Building, became contentious after the planning board announced it would not address an investment group's request to rezone a site on Forest Avenue in West Jackson to facilitate data center development. Jackson police officers were called to the scene to de-escalate the situation.

Councilman Vernon Hartley, who was present at the meeting, reported being confronted by protesters but stated he did not feel personally threatened, despite hearing of threatening comments made on social media. City Council President Brian Grizzell issued an email emphasizing the need for civil dialogue over "reckless behavior and threats."

The planning board is scheduled to reconvene next month, where discussions and potential tensions surrounding data centers are expected to continue. Separately, the Jackson City Council recently tabled a proposal from President Grizzell to implement a moratorium on data center construction within the city.
