The DeSoto Planning Commission in Florida has recommended a two-year moratorium on AI data center development, a move that could significantly impact the DCIP Group's extensive project in Arcadia. This recommendation follows a heated public meeting where the commission voted to remove exemptions for DCIP's pending applications, despite having previously approved rezoning for an initial 34-acre portion of the project.

The DCIP Group's proposed data center campus spans 1300 acres, with rezoning still needed for approximately 800 acres. While an initial draft of the moratorium had included exemptions for both the already rezoned land and the pending 800 acres, public concern, particularly regarding potential environmental impacts and noise, led the Planning Commission to amend the moratorium, eliminating these exemptions for the larger, unapproved portions.

In response, the DCIP Group issued a statement indicating they were present at the Planning Commission meeting in a listening capacity and would review the updated moratorium once released. The company also addressed some environmental concerns, stating the data center would generate most of its own electricity and use groundwater only as a last resort. The proposed moratorium now proceeds to the County Board of Commissioners for a final decision.
