Officials from Newtown, Wrightstown, and Upper Makefield townships in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, are collaborating through the Newtown Area Joint Zoning Council to establish comprehensive zoning regulations for AI data centers. Newtown Township Supervisors Chairman Ed Merriman stated that the jointure aims to develop an ordinance defining data centers, determining suitable locations, and setting limitations before specific projects are proposed. The officials emphasized the importance of proactive zoning to control data center development, which requires significant power and water resources. A draft ordinance is expected to be discussed at the June 4 meeting, with officials reviewing regulations from other municipalities.

Supervisor Elen Snyder, a member of the Newtown Township Environmental Advisory Council, urged collaboration with the environmental organization PennFuture, which specializes in drafting such ordinances. This initiative comes amidst broader regional efforts, as many townships, including Falls, Nockamixon, West Rockhill, and Hilltown, are also working on similar ordinances to restrict data centers.
