Collier County puts AI data centers on pause amid neighbor concerns

Collier County commissioners in Florida have moved to halt the development of new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers within the county. The commissioners voted on Tuesday to enact a "zoning-in-progress" measure, a strategic move designed to deny new data center applications while local officials formulate comprehensive, long-term land use regulations.

This decision follows weeks of vocal community opposition, with numerous residents expressing concerns about uncontrolled growth. During the meeting, one neighbor emphasized the critical issue of water scarcity, stating, "Every cell needs water to divide and if we don't have adequate water and we give water to these machines, we will cease to exist."

Commissioner Zoe Warner highlighted the county's proactive stance, noting that despite having no current data center applications, the goal is to "get ahead of this rapid growth." She explained that while a formal moratorium was discussed and recognized as a "buzzword," the "zoning-in-progress" approach is considered a more prudent and smarter way to regulate future AI development.
