Kalamazoo city commissioners are actively considering imposing a two-year moratorium on data centers to allow time to research and implement more restrictive zoning regulations. The commission will take the next step toward the moratorium at their August 10th meeting, with legal counsel preparing a presentation on options and requirements. There are currently no data center projects proposed in the city.

Kalamazoo city commissioners are slated to consider a moratorium on data centers, alongside exploring additional measures to safeguard the community from potential negative impacts of high-tech construction. During a recent meeting, commissioners expressed a desire to not only enact a moratorium but also to understand the full extent of their legal options to protect the city.

Attorney Aaron Leal has been tasked with presenting options, legal requirements, and opportunities regarding the moratorium at the commission's upcoming meeting. Vice Mayor Drew Duncan suggested a two-year moratorium, while Commissioner Jae Slaby inquired about the possibility of making the city's current zoning, which permits such facilities, more restrictive.

City Manager Malcolm Hankins affirmed that the moratorium would serve as an initial step, providing the commission with time to investigate other issues and options. Commissioner Chris Praedel highlighted that the concern mirrors discussions in municipalities nationwide regarding the impacts of various high-tech firms, especially given Kalamazoo's limited supply of buildable land. There are currently no data center firms actively seeking sites in the city; however, a local marijuana grower is reportedly offering to sell their Milwood operation, citing its suitable zoning and utility access for a data center. The commissioners are scheduled to advance the moratorium discussion at their Committee of the Whole meeting on August 10th.
