Michigan City council considers new data center moratorium
The Michigan City Common Council is considering a new moratorium that would pause new data center development until data center provisions are added to the city’s Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance or until July 31, 2028. The proposal was introduced by Councilman Dr. Vidya Kora after an earlier moratorium proposal was tabled over the planning commission’s lack of involvement.
Michigan City At Large Councilman Dr. Vidya Kora introduced a new data center moratorium during the Oct. 6 meeting of the Michigan City Common Council. The proposal would halt new data center development until the city amends its Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance to address data centers, or until July 31, 2028, whichever comes first.
The measure replaced an earlier moratorium proposal that the council indefinitely tabled on Sept. 15 because the Michigan City Planning Commission had not been involved. The new proposal created a rift among council members because its introduction reportedly occurred without the input or knowledge of the authors of the original moratorium.
