Google launched a prototype satellite carrying four of its AI chips from Vandenberg Space Force Base near Lompoc to test whether AI data centers could eventually operate in orbit. The Project Suncatcher experiment, developed with Planet Labs and launched on a SpaceX rocket, is intended to explore solar-powered computing as Earth-based data centers face rising electricity and water concerns.

Google launched its refrigerator-sized MVP satellite from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. The satellite carries four Google tensor processing units and is designed to test their performance under orbital radiation, extreme heat and the cooling challenges of space.

The mission is part of Project Suncatcher, a partnership between Google and Planet Labs to assess whether AI computing could eventually be moved into orbit and powered by near-continuous sunlight. Google plans additional launches and is considering larger satellite constellations, but the concept faces significant obstacles involving thermal management, communications, collision risks, space debris and the environmental impact of repeated launches and deorbiting. The company said the project remains an early feasibility effort rather than an operational orbital data center.
