Fort Worth has established its first Data Center & Infrastructure Commission, comprising advocates, academics, and industry representatives, to develop recommendations for regulating data center development. Chaired by Michael Slattery, the group will assess impacts on electricity, water, and economic development, and consider zoning standards, with a report expected by November 3.
The City of Fort Worth, Texas, announced the members of its inaugural Data Center & Infrastructure Commission, an 11-member advisory group tasked with developing recommendations for regulating data center development within the city. Chaired by Michael Slattery, a TCU professor and director of the Institute for Environmental Studies, the commission includes community advocates, academics, and industry representatives. The group was formed following city council approval in early August amidst growing interest in data center development and existing criticism from local residents.
The commission's mandate involves evaluating the environmental and economic impacts of data centers, specifically focusing on electricity, energy, and water consumption, as well as economic development. Furthermore, the group will consider establishing development standards, such as setbacks, noise, and lighting regulations, to address community concerns and prevent the concentration of data centers in historically underserved or industrialized areas. Supported by researchers from TCU, UTA, and the University of North Texas, the commission is scheduled to submit a comprehensive report of its findings and recommendations to the city council during a work session on November 3. The commission plans to meet weekly through October to compile its report.
