Indianapolis City-County Council President Maggie Lewis has called for a temporary pause on new data center developments within the city, citing months of public pressure from residents and environmental groups. Lewis stated that while she understands the importance of economic development, a "deep dive" is needed to allow the community and experts to have an honest conversation about data centers' potential impact on utilities, the environment, and quality of life.

Councilman Ron Gibson, however, supports bringing data centers to Indianapolis, emphasizing their potential for investment in neighborhoods and noting that proposed development sites have been vacant for decades and are zoned for industrial use. Gibson also highlighted that developers would be responsible for all utility costs to prevent additional burdens on taxpayers.

The proposal for a temporary moratorium and new zoning rules will be subject to a public hearing during a committee meeting on Monday. If approved by the committee, Lewis's amendment for a temporary moratorium would then advance to the full City-County Council for further consideration. This initiative follows actions across Indiana, where at least 17 counties have approved temporary moratoriums, and some, like Marshall and Cass counties, have enacted outright bans.
