The Knox County Commission is scheduled to debate a significant resolution on Monday evening aimed at imposing new requirements on data centers within the county. Initiated by Commissioners Andy Fox, Angela Russell, Rhonda Lee, and Adam Thompson, the resolution seeks to amend the county's existing zoning ordinance to regulate data center development and operations.

Key proposed amendments include capping data center height at 65 feet and prohibiting their construction within 300 feet of residential zones, schools, daycare centers, and other sensitive community facilities. Furthermore, the resolution intends to bar data centers from utilizing public water supplies and the general electric grid. It also outlines requirements for buffer planting with native trees and bushes, mandates sound studies with operational hour limitations based on noise levels, and necessitates the submission of Emergency Response Plans for review by local fire and emergency services. Data centers facing roads or residential areas would also be required to incorporate specific architectural styles such as Art Deco, Neoclassical, or Greek Revival.
