Commentary on data center development, economic impact, and moratoriums

The backlash against AI data centers is growing across the country, and now it's becoming part of the midterm political conversation. But angry crowds at county commission meetings aren't necessarily evidence of good policy. President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville have argued that data centers can bring investment, tax revenue, and economic development to communities that need it. That doesn't mean every data center belongs everywhere. That's the distinction getting lost. A fast-growing North Alabama community might decide its available power and infrastructure would be better reserved for another major industrial project. Lowndes County might look at the same proposal and see an enormous opportunity for new investment and revenue. Those communities have different needs. The answer isn't blanket moratoriums driven by whoever can generate the angriest crowd. Evaluate the project. Evaluate the infrastructure. Evaluate the economic impact. Then make the decision that actually works for the community.
