Huntingburg to consider data center moratorium; council adopts 2027 budget
Huntingburg officials are preparing a proposed six-month moratorium on approvals for data centers and battery energy storage systems. The Common Council supported bringing the proposal forward but did not enact it because required public notice had not been provided.
Huntingburg’s Advisory Plan Commission recommended temporarily suspending approvals for data centers and battery energy storage systems while it develops possible amendments to the city’s Unified Development Ordinance. City Attorney Phil Schneider will present a proposed six-month moratorium ordinance to the Common Council at a future meeting.
The council expressed support for considering the moratorium but took no action on it at the Oct. 27 meeting because the required public notice had not been issued. The meeting also included adoption of Huntingburg’s approximately $14 million 2027 budget and updates on utility operations, including a proposed Indiana Municipal Power Agency rate increase and planned CenterPoint transmission-pole replacements.
