Austin city leaders take steps to regulate, and potentially ban, data centers development
Austin city leaders have initiated the process to draft new regulations and potentially ban large-scale data center development within city limits. Despite no current projects, the City Council approved these steps to pre-empt future development. Staff have been directed to monitor permit applications to prevent any large data centers from being approved before new rules are implemented.
The Austin City Council has taken initial steps towards regulating and potentially banning large-scale data center development within its municipal boundaries. Although no major data center projects are currently underway in Austin, local leaders expressed a desire to proactively manage such development before it begins.
During a recent meeting, city council members approved a motion to commence the drafting of new rules regarding data centers. The council also instructed city staff to closely monitor permit and land use applications to ensure that no large data centers receive approval before the new regulations are finalized and implemented. These recommendations are expected to be presented back to the council members in the spring.
Some local residents voiced concerns that the city is moving too slowly, noting that issues related to data center development have been a problem in Central Texas for an extended period, leading to numerous complaints.
