Oregon utility raises electricity rates for data centers
Portland General Electric is increasing electricity rates by 29% for large industrial users, including data centers, because of a new state law called the POWER Act. This legislative change aims to ensure energy-heavy industries pay a larger share of electricity costs, which will result in a slight decrease for residential and commercial rates.
Portland General Electric (PGE) has announced a significant 29% increase in electricity rates for its large industrial customers, including data centers and cryptocurrency operations. This rate adjustment, which took effect recently, is a direct consequence of the POWER Act, a new state law approved by the Oregon Legislature last year.
The primary objective of the POWER Act is to mandate that industries with high energy consumption bear a more equitable share of the overall electrical usage costs. As a result of these increased rates for high-load users, residential and commercial electricity consumers served by PGE will experience a slight reduction in their power bills.
