Planned data center raises concerns among North Bee County residents

Bee County commissioners recently took action regarding the rapid expansion of data centers in South Texas. In a unanimous vote, the commissioners approved a resolution calling on the Texas Legislature to establish clearer guidelines for the development and operation of large-scale data centers. This decision was spurred by concerns from residents in North Bee County, particularly in the Pawnee area, over a planned data center project.

Residents like Woods vocalized worries about the potential impact of such facilities on local resources, including water, electricity, and the risk of pollutants. The primary concern among the community is the perceived lack of sufficient regulations to address how these developments might affect existing residents and their environment.

Bee County Judge George Morrill acknowledged the county's limited authority to implement meaningful regulations concerning commercial development on private property. He stressed that while the county is not inherently against data centers, the current regulatory gap prevents recourse when a project's impact extends beyond its property lines into the surrounding community. The resolution aims to address this by asking the state legislature to create a comprehensive framework for future data center installations across Texas.
