The Hanover County Planning Commission has once again heard and voted on the proposed Mountain Road Tech Park, a massive data center development in Ashland. Despite hours of testimony from dozens of frustrated residents who voiced concerns over environmental impacts, noise, traffic, and water usage, the commission voted to recommend approval of the project, with all but one member in favor.
The Mountain Road Tech Park, planned to span more than 400 acres off Route 33 and Mountain Road, would consume an estimated 600,000 gallons of water per day. In response to water usage concerns, developers from the company 'Tracked' have proffered a $15 million contribution towards public water infrastructure. They also state that the project complies with county ordinances and includes measures to reduce construction traffic, noise, and lower emissions from generators. Developers claim the project could generate approximately $900 million for Hanover County.
Public sentiment in Virginia regarding data centers is reportedly shifting, with a Washington Post poll indicating a decrease in support from 69% in 2023 to 35% in 2026, primarily due to environmental concerns. The Planning Commission's recommendation now sends the proposal to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, who are expected to make a final decision in May.
