The Clinton City Council recently rejected a proposed 120-day moratorium that would have temporarily prevented the construction of new data centers in the city. The measure, which aimed to provide the city time to draft an ordinance and regulations concerning data center operations, was voted down by five of the seven council members.

Data center opponents expressed significant concerns about the potential negative impacts of such facilities on the community. They highlighted issues such as environmental degradation, contamination or loss of water supply, increased electricity costs and outages, and public health risks. Opponents argued that while data center construction might create short-term jobs, the long-term permanent roles would be very few, and the facilities would be a permanent fixture once built. The city council is still facing a decision regarding the construction of a specific AI data center planned for west of Clinton.
