La Crosse County’s Data Center Study Committee continued its educational work on Wednesday as the county operates under an 18-month moratorium on data center development. County planning staff briefed the committee, which includes five County Board members and representatives from the county’s 18 municipalities, on how other Wisconsin communities regulate data centers.

Members also discussed what could happen to large facilities after they are decommissioned or become obsolete, including concerns about vacant buildings and potential blight. The committee has not yet made recommendations and is expected to continue meeting before advising the La Crosse County Board on how to approach future data center development.
