Data Centers Driving Up Electricity Costs Nationwide, Federal Reserve Researchers Say
Researchers from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas estimate that data centers have caused average wholesale electricity prices to rise by 2 to 6 percent. An economist from Lone Star Economics argues that "sweetheart deals" for data centers are unfairly shifting these increased costs to consumers nationwide. He suggests data centers should generate their own power instead of burdening communities.
Researchers with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas have estimated that the proliferation of data centers has led to a 2 to 6 percent increase in average wholesale electricity prices. Hank Lewis, Department Lead of Economics for Lone Star, stated that these added costs are being passed on to consumers, which he considers unfair.
Lewis criticized "sweetheart deals" offered to data centers by electric companies or state governments, which allow them to pay low rates despite heavy usage. He argues that these deals, often made under the promise of job creation, are not delivering the anticipated impact but are instead escalating electricity costs for everyone. Lewis suggested that data centers should assume responsibility for their own power generation, proposing they build their own power plants or utilize solar and wind farms to avoid burdening communities.
