Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek and state Sen. Christine Drazan debated the growth of artificial intelligence data centers and their effects on communities, electricity rates and state finances. Kotek argued that new projects should be paused while Oregon develops requirements for energy costs, renewable power, labor standards and community benefits. She cited opposition in La Pine and said she had stopped the use of state land in Salem for a proposed data center.

Drazan said some data centers have developed productive partnerships with local communities but argued that residents should not have projects imposed on them. She criticized the governor over utility rate increases and tax breaks, while Kotek defended the state’s POWER Act and said existing data centers should pay their fair share of electricity costs. The candidates also discussed how to address facilities already operating in Oregon, including through renewed community negotiations and state oversight.
