The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced its readiness to meet record electricity demand during an ongoing heat wave, noting that power usage had exceeded levels from the January 2026 ice storm. Despite the surge, TVA spokesperson Scott Fiedler stated the utility is not anticipating power shortages or the need for load curtailment. TVA relies on its nuclear and coal plants for baseline power, supplemented by natural gas plants designed for peak demand.

Fiedler confirmed TVA's confidence in serving new customers amidst rapid growth from AI data centers and advanced manufacturing projects. Data centers, which constituted just 1% of TVA's industrial load in 2019, are projected to reach 18% by 2025, now representing over 10% of TVA's total electric load. This significant increase has prompted questions about potential cost impacts on residential customers.

In response, TVA has implemented new policies to ensure that data center developers pay the upfront costs for the new electrical infrastructure required by their projects, preventing existing customers from subsidizing these developments. The utility is also planning to add more than 6,200 megawatts of new power generation, equivalent to powering approximately 3.6 million homes, to accommodate continued population growth, advanced manufacturing, and energy-intensive AI data centers across the Tennessee Valley.
