Spanish Fork City Council approves changes to city code for data centers

The Spanish Fork City Council has approved changes to the city's code, clearing the way for a proposed data center project to move forward. Mayor Mike Mendenhall confirmed the council's attention to public concerns, particularly regarding the data center's water demands. He noted that Spanish Fork meters its water, allowing for consumption control if necessary.

Jeff Chavez, CEO of Volition, the company behind the data center, stated that their closed-loop cooling system is water-efficient, using roughly the same amount of water as one or two Utah households. Additionally, the City Council has placed a restriction on the city, limiting it to only one data center unless future leaders vote to alter this policy.
