The Cottage Grove Village Board unanimously voted last night to implement a temporary moratorium on data center development. This measure specifically targets data centers exceeding 10,000 square feet and will be in effect for 12 months, or until new village regulations are adopted, whichever occurs first.
During this period, village staff will conduct research into the potential impacts of data centers on crucial local resources, including energy consumption, water usage, traffic patterns, and air quality. A board member stated that current zoning ordinances and codes are not adequately prepared to address the scale and novelty of data center projects, emphasizing the need to protect local resources, residents, and neighbors from potential adverse effects.
To ensure regional coordination and informed policy-making, the village also plans to consult with the Dane County Advisory Committee on data centers. The Village Board has expressed its intention to establish comprehensive data center regulations before the moratorium's expiration. There is also an option for the board to extend the moratorium for an additional six months if needed.
