US Data Centers, a subsidiary of Digihost Technology Inc., is undertaking a significant $440 million data center conversion project in Columbiana, Alabama, located within Shelby County. The initiative involves transforming an existing facility, previously used for bitcoin mining, into a Tier 3 data center specifically designed for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. The project is planned in two phases, aiming for a total capacity of 55MW.

The first phase, representing a $176 million investment, is slated for completion in 2026 and will deliver 22MW of HPC capacity. The second phase, expected by early 2027, will add another 33MW, bringing the total investment to $440 million, primarily financed through debt. Building permits have been issued for the project, including a $7 million permit to Dunn Building Co.
