Mandan residents Susan Beehler and Sheila Froehlich submitted a petition containing 706 signatures to the City of Mandan on Sept. 22. The petition seeks a special election on an ordinance banning data centers with capacity above 25 megawatts. The signatures were collected in eight days after the residents launched their campaign, following an earlier petition seeking a data center moratorium that gathered 1,460 signatures.

The Mandan City Commission is scheduled to discuss the petition on Oct. 6. Separately, the Mandan Planning and Zoning Commission approved a draft data center ordinance incorporating six changes based on public feedback, including tighter noise limits, a ban on nondisclosure agreements, PFAS-free coolant requirements, additional setbacks, school-related thresholds and monitoring-location limits. The city expects significant public attendance when the draft ordinance is reviewed by the City Commission.
