The Austin City Council has unanimously voted to accelerate the implementation of new land use regulations aimed at preventing large hyperscale data centers from being built within city limits. The council expressed urgency, directing city staff to propose initial amendments to the land development code by December, rather than waiting until spring 2027 for a comprehensive regulatory framework. Council Member Mike Siegel emphasized the need to close existing loopholes quickly to mitigate the risk of a large data center being constructed under current, less restrictive rules.

The push for new regulations stems from concerns that hyperscale data centers could significantly strain Austin's water and electric systems, generate excessive noise and light, and negatively impact surrounding neighborhoods. City officials noted that current city code lacks specific definitions or land uses for data centers, which are presently categorized as "communications services" and often located in less restrictive zoning districts, making them difficult to track or regulate.

Mayor Kirk Watson urged staff to heed the council's clear intentions, as the meeting drew considerable public support for regulating or banning large data centers to protect environmental quality and quality of life.
