MC Council tables data center moratorium
The Michigan City Common Council voted to indefinitely table a proposed temporary moratorium on new data center developments. This decision means the moratorium will not move forward for now. The proposed ordinance also included a review of the city's zoning ordinance to define and regulate data center development.
The Michigan City Common Council voted 8-1 during its Sept. 15 meeting to indefinitely table a proposed "Indefinite Temporary Moratorium on New Data Center Developments and Related Approvals within Michigan City." Councilman Joseph Nelson cast the sole dissenting vote, effectively halting immediate progress on the moratorium.
The tabled ordinance not only aimed to pause new data center construction but also included provisions for a review of the Michigan City Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. This review was intended for the specific purpose of defining and regulating data center development within the city.
