House passes bill aimed at addressing impact of data centers on energy costs

The debate highlighted contrasting views, with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., citing economic benefits like tax revenue for local teachers from a data center in Richland Parish. Conversely, Rep. Pallone criticized former President Donald Trump and Republican leaders for dismissing public concerns about data centers' impact on utility prices and the environment, referencing a poll showing widespread public worry over energy and water impacts.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colo., emphasized the need to build out U.S. power systems to meet demand without burdening consumers. This legislative action comes amid calls from some lawmakers for a full moratorium on AI data centers until robust safeguards are established for both AI safety and the economic and environmental impacts of data centers.
