North Loop P+Z Committee Delays Vote on Minneapolis Data Center Project
The North Loop Neighborhood Association's Planning + Zoning Committee took no action on a Conditional Use Permit for Legacy Investing's proposed data center, citing a lack of detailed information from the developer. The committee requested a one-month delay for the City Planning Commission hearing to allow for more information gathering and community questions regarding the project's impact on water, electricity, and noise.
The North Loop Neighborhood Association's Planning + Zoning Committee, a volunteer body that has reviewed hundreds of development proposals over two decades, expressed eagerness to review details for Legacy Investing's proposed data center.
The project aims to transform the former Star Tribune printing press building into a data center. However, representatives from Legacy Investing failed to provide the level of detail the committee typically expects for projects of this nature.
As a result, the P+Z Committee passed a motion of no action on the Conditional Use Permit application. The committee cited the lack of information provided by Legacy Investing as the reason for its decision. It also requested a one-month delay to the City Planning Commission hearing, intending to use the time to gather necessary information, address community questions, and postpone its own vote until a scheduled September meeting.
Community concerns raised during the review included the potential impact of the data center on local water and electricity resources, as well as noise.
