Elon Musk-founded SpaceXAI has announced it will remove all temporary mobile turbines powering its $20 billion data center in DeSoto County, Mississippi. This decision follows an agreement with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to begin the removal process in August, concluding by July 2027. The company, formerly known as SpaceX and xAI, plans to rely on a permanent 1.2 GW power plant under construction in Southaven, which has clearance from a Clean Air Act permit.
The data center and its initial temporary turbines have sparked considerable public outcry. Local residents filed a lawsuit against SpaceXAI over alleged noise disruptions. Additionally, the NAACP initiated a lawsuit citing potential environmental and public health ramifications from the data center and its associated power plant, though the Justice Department has sought to dismiss this claim.
In response to complaints, SpaceXAI officials stated they are equipping the mobile turbines with advanced technology to reduce environmental impact and are monitoring air quality to adhere to EPA standards. The company is also investing millions in sound walls, silencers, and turbines with advanced quieting technology for both the temporary units and the 41 permanent turbines planned for the new power plant. An official statement from SpaceXAI emphasized their commitment to being "good neighbors" and minimizing impact on the local Southaven community.
