The PJM Interconnection, the power grid operator for Maryland and 12 other states, is finalizing critical decisions regarding electricity demand from data centers. Its Board of Managers is expected to vote soon on recommendations from members. These decisions include two key data center policies: Reliability Backstop Procurement and Connect and Manage.
The PJM Interconnection, which oversees the regional power grid for Maryland, 12 other states, and Washington D.C., is poised to finalize significant regulations concerning the electricity consumption of data centers. These decisions are critical for managing the increasing power demands from the rapidly expanding data center sector within its operational footprint.
The PJM Board of Managers is anticipated to cast a final vote on these policies in the near future. This vote will be based on recommendations put forth by PJM members, a group that includes various generation owners and utility companies.
On June 30, PJM members had already voted on two pivotal data center policies. These policies are identified as the Reliability Backstop Procurement and Connect and Manage, indicating a structured approach to address data center energy integration and grid reliability.
