A recent report from Data Center Watch highlights a significant surge in opposition to data center development across the United States. The study found that local resistance efforts successfully blocked or delayed at least 75 data center projects, collectively valued at nearly $130 billion, during the first quarter of 2026. This growing pushback has led to a doubling of active opposition groups in 49 states, reshaping the national conversation about rapid technological expansion.
In Abilene, Texas, where the "Stargate AI data center project," also referred to as the "ASI site," is underway, residents are expressing deep concerns about its impact. Alexandra Broyles noted that the city is struggling to manage its rapid growth, citing increased strain on resources and rising rent. Harley, another resident, shared fears of becoming homeless due to escalating housing costs, explaining how her family with three incomes struggles to make ends meet and that her rent has increased from $1,800 in 2022 to $2,200, while friends have seen their rent jump from $1,200 to $3,000. She also questioned the wages paid to workers at the ASI site.
Harley's concerns extend to data security and the general proliferation of AI, referencing a recent data breach at the Abilene Police Department.
