Governor Abbott had issued directives on June 10 to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to prevent data centers from financially or resource-burdening Texans. Following public testimony revealing data gaps, Abbott paused new data center construction on August 3 for an audit to ensure compliance with his directives. Over 40 companies, including Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, have publicly stated their compliance with the new standards.
Recent polls, including one from the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project, indicate 57% of Texans oppose data center construction in their communities. The same poll showed Abbott leading Hinojosa by 5 points, a significant tightening that has given Democrats hope for the upcoming election.
