
This tiny farming town you’ve never heard of is helping Microsoft sell America on data centers
Quincy, Washington, a small farming town, has become a model for Microsoft's efforts to showcase the benefits of data centers, having used tax revenue from these facilities to fund new public infrastructure. While data centers have brought economic gains and a partnership for a water-reuse utility, concerns about long-term water and electricity needs for the growing region persist.
Quincy, Washington, a small farming community of about 8,100 residents, has transformed into a key location for data center development over the past two decades, primarily driven by Microsoft. The tech giant initially chose Quincy for its affordable land, cool climate, and access to Columbia River hydropower.
Microsoft is now highlighting Quincy as a success story to counter growing national opposition to data centers, addressing concerns about electricity prices, water usage, and job creation. The town has leveraged tax revenues from data centers to fund significant community projects, including a new high school, hospital, and an aquatic center, with an indoor sports complex also planned. While data centers are not major direct employers, the aggregate presence of multiple facilities contributes meaningfully to local employment and the tax base.
Microsoft has committed to a national strategy that includes higher utility rates for data centers to cover energy use and grid upgrades, as well as the implementation of closed-loop cooling systems for water recycling. Quincy already exemplifies this, with a $31 million water-reuse utility developed in partnership with the city, which treats and recirculates cooling water, reducing reliance on groundwater by an estimated 138 million gallons annually, according to the EPA.
Despite these successes, former Mayor Patty Martin has cautioned that Quincy must address long-term water and electricity sustainability, citing pressures from population growth, electric vehicles, and changing snowpack. Quincy's experience serves as a case study on both the economic potential and the environmental questions communities must address when hosting data center developments.
