The League of Women Voters from the Palos Orland Area chapter in Illinois is hosting a panel discussion on Saturday, March 14th about the effects of large data centers on the local utility grid. The event, titled "Energy & Utilities Rate Hikes and How to Make Your Voice Heard", will take place at the Palos Heights Public Library.
The panel will feature speakers from the Citizens Utility Board and Public Interest Research Group, who will present the latest information on data centers and their impact on electricity, gas, and water costs. Attendees will learn about recent rate increase requests made by local utilities to the Illinois Commerce Commission, as well as proposed state legislation called the POWER ACT that aims to shift the financial burden of data center development away from communities.
The League of Women Voters is also encouraging residents to contact their state lawmakers to support the POWER ACT, which they believe will help prevent communities from having to pay for the increased energy demands and infrastructure strain caused by large data centers.
