Clinton City Council votes down data center moratorium, considers regulations
The Clinton City Council recently voted down a proposed 90-day moratorium on data center development, despite significant public input from concerned citizens. A businessman had been invited to consult on the data center issue but found the city's approach disorganized. City officials are now proceeding with efforts to regulate data centers within city limits.
At a June 9th Clinton City Council meeting, businessman Kevin Bradley, experienced in writing ordinances, expressed concerns about the city's handling of data center issues. Bradley, part of a group addressing the matter, described the process as "disjointed and haphazard," noting the absence of an Ad Hoc committee, clear goals, or accountability.
He suggested implementing a 90-day moratorium to allow for proper research, a measure that was subsequently voted down by the Council despite four hours of public testimony from concerned citizens. A subsequent request for details on consultants engaged by the council yielded responses from Cody Seeley that included city staff and engineering sources, but lacked specifics on the type of engineering consultation.
Clinton officials are now reportedly taking steps towards regulating data centers within city limits, following the rejection of the moratorium.
