Huron Valley Area Labor Federation calls for data center moratorium
The Huron Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF) is advocating for a moratorium on new large-scale data centers, citing concerns about rapid, unregulated growth and a lack of public scrutiny. While acknowledging the creation of union jobs, the federation views the expansion of data centers as a growing problem for the region.
The Huron Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF) has issued a statement calling for a moratorium on the construction of new large-scale data centers across the region it represents. Ian Robinson, President of the Federation, voiced concerns about the rapid and often unregulated expansion of these facilities, which he attributes to significant tax incentives and a lack of adequate public scrutiny.
The HVALF, which is the regional body of the AFL-CIO, represents over 22,000 workers in Washtenaw, Livingston, Jackson, and Hillsdale Counties. Despite the fact that data center construction creates union jobs, the federation believes that the overall impact of unchecked growth presents a growing problem, prompting their demand for a pause in development.
