This movement follows a proposal by Behring Companies and leases signed by Tesla and Prometheus for potential data center sites. Oakland City Councilmember Carroll Fife is reportedly working on a proposal for a moratorium on data centers.
Residents in Oakland, California, are continuing their strong opposition to the development of data centers within the city, advocating for a citywide ban. The movement is spearheaded by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and supported by community leaders like the Rev. Jeffrey Parker and Xavier Buck of the Huey P. Newton Foundation, who argue that data centers consume vast resources and disproportionately harm lower-income and marginalized communities.
The push for a ban gained momentum after Behring Companies proposed a 20,000-square-foot data center in downtown Oakland. Additionally, Tesla and an AI startup co-founded by Jeff Bezos, Prometheus, have signed leases at another city site, although their specific plans for data centers remain unconfirmed.
Concerns raised by opponents focus heavily on the environmental impact of the AI industry, including high water and energy consumption, as well as noise pollution. Oakland City Councilmember Carroll Fife, whose district includes the Behring proposal, has engaged the city attorney to explore options for regulating data centers. Recent reports indicate that Councilmember Fife is developing a proposal for a moratorium on data center development.
