City of Isanti data center moratorium now one year

The Isanti City Council has voted to adjust its proposed data center moratorium, reducing the duration from an initial 30 months to a legally compliant 12 months. According to Community Development Director Stephanie Hillesheim, the maximum permissible length for such a moratorium under state law is 12 months, during which time city staff must be actively developing a permanent ordinance.
Hillesheim noted a recent increase in interest from data center developers, with two inquiries received since the last council meeting, despite the city's current lack of necessary infrastructure. Council member Steve Lundeen highlighted concerns over water usage, pointing out that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is enforcing stricter limits during the ongoing drought, and Isanti is already nearing its maximum allowed water consumption. Lundeen suggested this could provide leverage for the city in deterring data center construction.
The council unanimously approved the draft ordinance for the 12-month moratorium. The draft will undergo a 10-day public posting period before returning to the council for final approval at its subsequent meeting.
