Yakima County considers moratorium on data centers as community voices concerns

Yakima County commissioners are proposing a six-month moratorium on data center development in unincorporated areas of Yakima County, Washington. This temporary halt on land use and building permits aims to allow officials and the community to study the potential impacts of data centers on the region's resources, including water, electricity, and land.

Planning Director Thomas Carroll has urged residents to form a citizens group to provide input on whether data centers should be permitted in the valley. The proposal would first go before the Yakima Valley Planning Commission for review before being considered by the county commissioners for final approval.

Community members have already begun to voice their concerns. One resident highlighted the region's rural, agricultural, and drought-stricken nature, expressing apprehension about risking precious water, electricity, and land resources for the benefit of large technology companies. Christina Serabia echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that while there might be economic reasons for wanting data centers, the potential cost to the valley's environment is too high.

Currently, there are no data center applications pending in Yakima County.
