Texas Reviews Data Centers Seeking ERCOT Grid Connection
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered an audit of all data center projects seeking to connect to the ERCOT power grid. This audit, conducted by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and ERCOT, will review electricity demand, water use, community impacts, and ownership. No new data center interconnections will proceed until this verification process is complete, with non-compliant projects being denied grid access.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has initiated a comprehensive audit of all data center projects currently in the interconnection process with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power grid. This directive mandates state regulators, specifically the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and ERCOT, to conduct thorough "verification and audit" of these projects.
The audit will scrutinize various aspects, including the data centers' electricity demand, water usage, potential community impacts, and ownership structures. Governor Abbott emphasized that no data center projects will be permitted to advance in the ERCOT interconnection process until this verification is fully completed. He stated that any project failing to comply with the requirements set by PUCT, ERCOT, and state law "must be denied connection to the Texas grid," prioritizing Texans' interests.
The move comes amid growing concerns among Texans regarding the rapid proliferation of data centers, particularly their noise generation and substantial resource demands. ERCOT is reportedly evaluating requests from facilities totaling over 474 gigawatts for grid connection, with approximately 90% of these requests originating from proposed data center developments. This statewide audit aims to address these concerns by ensuring stricter oversight before new projects are integrated into the power infrastructure.
