Volition moves proposed Spanish Fork data center location after resident concerns
Volition has relocated its proposed data center in Spanish Fork, Utah, after local residents raised concerns regarding noise, water usage, and the project's proximity to homes. The company moved the site from Canyon Logistics to the Stockman Flats building in western Spanish Fork. The new location will still undergo city development and approval processes.
Volition, a data center developer, has decided to move the proposed location of its Spanish Fork data center to the Stockman Flats building in the western part of the city. This decision comes after months of resident concerns regarding the original site at the Canyon Logistics property, where residents worried about potential noise, water use, and the facility's closeness to homes.
Volition CEO Jeff Chavez stated that while the company believed it could address these concerns through design, it chose to seek an alternative location to better suit the community. The relocation follows the Spanish Fork City Council's approval of a Title 15 amendment, which established a clear process for data center proposals. Residents like Teresa Wood, who live near the original site, expressed surprise at the move but indicated a more positive view of the project at its new, more industrially zoned location.
The city of Spanish Fork supports Volition's right to select its preferred site, but officials, including communications manager Jack Urquhart, confirmed that any new proposal must still meet all city requirements and go through the standard development and approval processes. Volition anticipates construction to occur from late 2027 to early 2029, emphasizing that the project's design, focused on minimizing water, electricity, and sound impacts, remains unchanged apart from the location.
