Texas counties see surge in large data center proposals, ERCOT data shows

Texas is facing an unprecedented surge in proposed large data centers, with over 480 projects seeking to connect to the ERCOT grid by 2032, demanding nearly five times the state's record power demand. This boom is creating significant concerns about grid capacity, rising electricity costs, and water resources, leading to calls for new regulations and potential moratoriums. While many proposals are speculative, the situation necessitates substantial grid expansion and policy adjustments across the state.

Texas is experiencing an unprecedented boom in proposed large data centers, with new data from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) revealing that over 480 large data centers have requested to connect to the state's power grid through 2032. These prospective facilities are collectively seeking more than 418 gigawatts of electricity, nearly five times ERCOT's all-time power demand record. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas noted that this surge in large electricity users is unlike anything the grid operator has previously experienced, although experts widely believe many proposed facilities will not be built due to various constraints.

The influx of data center proposals has highlighted the urgent need for Texas to significantly expand its power grid and rapidly fashion new regulations to protect everyday ratepayers from negative impacts. Cameron Poursoltan, a lobbyist with the Data Center Coalition, told Texas lawmakers that the current regulatory landscape is not equipped for this pace of growth. ERCOT spokesperson Trudi Webster confirmed the grid operator is enacting new rules to better differentiate serious projects from speculative ones in the interconnection queue. The Houston Chronicle, in partnership with Cleanview, has created an interactive map detailing existing and proposed projects.
