AWS Withdraws Calvert County Data Center Project; Moratorium Public Hearing Scheduled
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has withdrawn its application for a proposed data center project in Calvert County, Maryland. Concurrently, the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing to consider a temporary six-month moratorium on site plan approvals for data center developments. This moratorium aims to allow time to review and adopt new regulations and zoning amendments related to data centers.
Amazon Data Services Inc. (AWS) has formally withdrawn its Conceptual Site Development Plan application for the Calvert Technology Center, a proposed data center near the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Calvert County. AWS had submitted the application in May 2026 but has now decided not to pursue the project.
In a related development, the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners has scheduled a public hearing for August 18, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. in Prince Frederick. The purpose of the hearing is to consider a proposed temporary six-month moratorium on site plan approvals for all new data center development projects.
This proposed ordinance aims to provide the county with time to review, study, and adopt comprehensive regulations and zoning ordinance text amendments specifically addressing data centers and heavy industrial land uses. Interested parties can review the proposed ordinance via the Department of Planning & Zoning and submit written comments or participate in the live-streamed public hearing.
